Gujarat, 'The jewel of the West', is a maritime state with the longest coastline(1290 km) in the country. It gets its name from a tribe known as 'Gujjars', which settled in the area in the 1st century A.D.
Gujarat is the highest producer of cotton, groundnut, salt, milk and petrochemical in India. It ranks second in the production of tobacco, third in pharmaceuticals and has important electronic and textile industries.
Geographically, it can be divided into three areas -
- The eastern region (mainland) - which includes major cities like Surat, Ahemdabad, Vadodra .
- Saurashtra - plain of Kathiawar peninsula.
- Gulf of Cambay - which divides the mainland from peninsula.
Gujarat housed the regions of Indus Valley Civilization and Harappan sites and makes it significant territory that reveals the history of the country.
